Backing up our New Zealand colleagues

The power of solidarity was visibly on show this week. A meeting at ITF House of dockers and seafarers’ union reps put the management of Ports of Auckland Limited on notice that unless they act to settle the dispute there they risk us making them a ‘port of convenience’, with all that that implies for their image and future. It’s the first time we’ve had to make such a threat and, along with the efforts of our friends in MUNZ, the New Zealand maritime union, it’s stirred up the company and helped galvanise public opinion. Following the publicity that the ITF is ready to back MUNZ an opinion poll in The Aucklander asking who was to blame for the dispute saw 12 per cent blaming the union and a massive 83 per cent the company.
